Taking a Stand?

Terry Jones, a minister at a small church in Florida, has sparked a world-wide controversy with his plan to burn a Quran on Saturday, the 9th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks.  Mr. Jones has received numerous requests, from the White House on down, to cancel his event.  Even General David Petraeus, the commander of military forces in Afghanistan, commented on the situation, insisting that such a demonstration would put the military in harms way.

From the article I read, Jones believes that to cancel this event would be to "back down" to Islam, rather than taking a stand.

But I have to ask what stand is he making and who is he taking a stand for?

Burning a Quran is totally inconsistent with the teaching of the Bible. The Bible teaches that you overcome evil with good, not more evil.  If Mr. Jones wants to remember and honor those murdered on 9/11, then I am all in favor of that. But to mark the occasion with a retaliatory gesture like burning the Quran is not consistent with the teachings of Jesus Christ.

If Mr. Jones is a TRUE follower of Jesus Christ, he would look for ways to bless his enemy, rather than curse them or provoke them.

It’s a shame that all Christians will be portrayed to have the same views as this minister.

Jesus taught that He is the way, the truth, and the life. I personally believe that Jesus is the ONLY way to God. I know this sounds offensive to people in our inclusive culture. But what I find amazing about the life of Jesus is that He gave people a choice. People were allowed to choose if they would follow Him or not.

I think Jesus would teach His followers not to take a stand in the manner this preacher in Florida is doing. Instead, Jesus would teach His followers to make a choice.

Jesus would say to choose…

Between taking a stand or taking a knee.
Between shouting “I’m right” or confessing “We’ve both been wrong.”
Between standing tall or bending to serve others.
Between earthly power and weakness.

My advice to Mr. Jones would be to quote the Apostle Paul in 1 Corinthians 10:12:
“So, if you think you are standing firm, be careful that you don't fall!”
